Watershed - An area of land that drains water, sediment and dissolved materials to a common receiving body or outlet. The term is not restricted to surface water runoff and includes interactions with subsurface water. Watersheds vary from the largest river basins to just acres or less in size. In urban watershed management, a watershed is seen as all the land which contributes runoff to a particular water body.

(This is the larger watershed of Dallas County)

Mesquite Texas Watershed

All of the water that leaves Edgemont Park feeds into the East Fork Trinity River. The City of Mesquite has two water mains; one water main is the sewer which is treated at the Mesquite Sewage Plant off of Lawson Road. The second water main is the South Mesquite Creek; which carries off all of our water to the East Fork Trinity River and is left untreated!

(The map below shows the area where all of our stormwater drains).

A drainage basin is a region of land where stormwater from rain or snow drains downfill into a body of water, such as a lake, dam, river, wetland, sea, or ocean. The drainage basin includes both the steams and rivers that convey the water as well as the land surface water into those channels. The drainage basin acts like a funnell, collecting all the water withing the area covered by the basin by channelling it into a waterway.

Example of a “channel” in our neighborhood merging the storm water to the South Mesquite Creek.

This channel is east of McWhorter Park. No fish exist in this creek. Used to have crawfish and minnows… Channel Edgemont Park

Other terms associated with drainage basins are: catchment, catchment area, catchment basin, drainage area, river basin and water basin.

Somebody needs to get this area rezoned. Since 1988, it has been declared a FEMA floodzone. Look at map above this letter

FEMA Floodway is located in the woods on right. This land has been sold to a developer as of August of 2006.

I know who owns it now! VERY NICE FOLKS!Our watershed

Since this land has been sold. In order to build on this land; the developer can do one of three things.

1. Build a retention pond. Like the one on Bruton Road near Hodges Park.

Retention Ponds and Hodges Park

2. Build a water retention tank. Like the one at the end of Hickory Tree and 6-35 in Balch Springs.

3. Could implement Best Management Practices and utilize the open space for Parks and Recreation.
